EU Presidency brings week of Geographical Digital Information Conferences to The CCD

DUBLIN – 15 February, 2013 - The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) has been chosen to host a series of global and European conferences on geographic digital information as part of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Running from 4-8 March 2013, the conferences are an acknowledgement of the rapidly increasing importance of Geographic Information (GI) in the everyday lives of people and businesses, and will explore how digital information, and geographic information in particular, can be used to address environmental, economic development and governance. 

As part of the initiative, the European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information (EUROGI) will present imaGIneon 7-8 March 2013, a conference which will explore the opportunities available in existing Geographic Information and geotechnologies for addressing economic growth, governance and environmental issues. In addition, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) will present an opportunity to discuss the evolving European Union Location Framework and the Commission’s Directorate General Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) will explore issues associated with the Digital Agenda for Europe.

The conference will also focus on trends which will shape the future GI environment and the opportunities inherent in the near to mid-term future. High-level, globally recognised keynote speakers will also make plenary addresses and host panel sessions identifying the business, governance, community and other opportunities inherent in GI/GIS, and set out what actions need to be undertaken by both businesses and public sector bodies.

The week-long series of events will be opened by Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan T.D. and is expected to draw up to 600 delegates from across the world.
